Does Chiropractic treatment work for Migraines and Headaches?
Chiropractic is often a very effective treatment for all kinds of headaches–including tension and cluster headaches, migraines due to stress, TMJ induced, and those caused by poor posture.
Migraines
Each year, about 25 million people in the U.S. experience migraine headaches and about 75% are women. Migraines can be debilitating and cut into your normal life, affecting your work, family, and sleep. It is important to get at the cause of your problem, rather than treat the effects with drugs, injections, and so forth. When the cause is addressed and corrected properly the symptoms will dissipate.
Headaches
Almost everyone will experience a headache at some point in their life! Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Most people describe them as a feeling of a tight band or dull ache around the head or behind the eyes. A common cause of tension headaches is subluxations in the upper back and neck which are effectively treated with chiropractic adjustments.
A report released in 2001 from Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that “spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than commonly prescribed medications.”
Treatment
When you come in the office with a headache or migraine complaint–expect a full history to be taken, an exam, as well as X-Rays, if necessary. It is important to find out the cause of your pain, whether it is structural, caused by misalignments in the cervical spine due to stress or trauma, or due to food sensitivities or other environmental stresses.
